Last night marked the Iowa premiere of a one-woman play about Erma Bombeck, a humorist who won wide fame for her column that described life in the Midwestern suburbs and was carried in more than 900 newspapers.

Pam Sherman tells us about the one-woman show she is bringing to the Temple Theater in Des Moines, and the Iowans who wrote the play.

Bombeck became a household name in the 1970s and 1980s, and gave voice to the everyday joys and struggles faced by women of all ages, while being a mother, daughter, and “domestic demigoddess.”

“One of our early memories was our mom at the dining room table holding The Cleveland Plain Dealer,” said Allison, calling from Pasadena, California. “She was laughing so hard that the newspaper was shaking. We’re going, ‘Mom, what’s so funny?”

“The only two words she could manage to get out were ‘Erma Bombeck.’ Shortly after that, we’d come home from school and fling the paper down on the ground so we could both read her column at the same time.”

Chagrin Falls sister-duo Allison and Margaret Engle will premiere their production of Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End at the Cleveland Play House from July 29-August 20 at Outcalt Theatre in Playhouse Square. The play chronicles the life of trailblazer Erma Bombeck, one of the first women journalists to reach a national audience with her columns, eventually spanning across 900 newspapers in North America.

Cleveland Play House kicks off its 108th season in September. But before that, America’s first professional regional theater presents “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End,” a one-woman show about the beloved American columnist and humorist, for a summertime run.
